London - Engineers were last night working to remove a train which was derailed outside a power station while carrying nuclear fuel flasks.

Investigations are under way into the cause of the derailment, which took place on a siding next to the east coast main line at the Torness power station near Dunbar, East Lothian.

The 306 freight service had been carrying three empty spent nuclear fuel containers from Sellafield in Cumbria to Torness when the incident happened at around 9.40 a.m. Two carriages came off the rail but remained upright as the train was reversing into a siding before picking up waste material from Torness.

The incident prompted fresh calls for urgent investigations into the transportation of nuclear shipments.
