A man who was in a gang which attacked and robbed a drug addict has been sentenced to three years' detention in St Patrick's Institution by Judge Elizabeth Dunne.

Gareth Carroll (18), Cherry Orchard Avenue, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to charges of robbery and the unauthorised taking of a motorcycle on December 11th, 1998. Det Garda Brendan Walsh said Carroll along with four youths punched and kicked their victim, who was a drug addict.

The victim had gone from work to Ballyfermot to buy heroin but instead was set upon by the youths, robbed of £360 wages and had his motorcycle taken. Det Garda Walsh said Carroll had one previous conviction and was currently serving an 18-month sentence for road traffic offences.

Judge Dunne set a review date for May 8th next and ordered an updated probation report.
