A DUBLIN taxi driver who admitted the larceny by finding of almost £10,000 after he dropped off a fare in Co Louth was given an 11 month suspended sentence by Drogheda District Court yesterday.

Insp Pat Dolan, of Drogheda, said that on June 30th, 1995, Mr Jack Marry and a friend got a taxi from Dublin Airport to Tullyallen, Co Louth. When Mr Marry got out of the car and walked into his house, he had £9,950 which he inadvertently dropped.

Mr William Murphy (27), Lorcan Drive, Santry, admitted the offence. He told the court he had been doing a U turn after dropping the men off when an object was thrown at the car. He saw it was a brown envelope.

He told the court he turned back and picked up the object. He thought there might have been money in it. He had put the money in a safe place. All the money was recovered.

Judge Flann Brennan said it was extremely serious in view of the amount of money involved. He imposed an 11 month prison sentence but suspended it for two years on the defendant agreeing to keep the peace in his own bond of £100 with an independent surety of £250. He also fined him £200. Recognisance was set on the defendant's own bond of £100 with independent surety of £100.
