Speculation is growing among opponents of the proposed £23 million sewage treatment plant planned for Mutton Island in Galway Bay that the Government could change its mind on its support for the project.

The Minister for the Environment Mr Howlin, gave the go ahead for the plant in January, despite objections on environmental grounds from Labour Party councillors in Galway and other organisations.

The Minister for the Gaeltacht, Mr Higgins, has agreed to meet the Save Galway Bay (SGB) group, which has opposed the building of the treatment plant on Mutton Island.

A Labour councillor, Mr Tom Costello, said yesterday that the SGB was treating next Monday's meeting with Mr Higgins very seriously.
