Labour's Róisín Shortall has been elected on the first count in Dublin North West with 9,359 votes, 1,156 ahead of the quota.

Labour also brought in a second TD  in this three seater constituency,  with John Lyons, a Dublin City Councillor, taking the third seat behind Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Dessie Ellis, who won an impressive 7,115 first preferences.

Mr Ellis got transfers from United Left Alliance candidate Andrew Keegan, who got 677 first preferences, as well as a smattering from other independents who all polled in the low hundreds.

Fianna Fáil lost the two seats it held in the constituency. Former minister  Pat Carey got just 3,869 first preferences.

The other outgoing Fianna Fáil TD was Noel Ahern, a brother of former taoiseach Bertie Ahern. He topped the poll with almost 8,000 first preferences in 2007 but did not run this time out.

The current Lord Mayor of Dublin, Fine Gael's Gerry Breen - who was a running-mate of Richard Bruton in nearby Dublin North Central in the 2002 general election - got 2,988 votes ahead of his party colleague Dr Bill Tormey at 2,508.

Fine Gael has not held a seat in the constituency since the defeat of Mary Flaherty in the 1997 election.
