Will Self, the writer and Observer journalist sacked because he did not deny an accusation that he took drugs while on board Mr Major's campaign jet, said yesterday he regretted the affair had distracted attention from the "real issues".
The cult novelist, a self confessed former heroin addict, allegedly hid in the aircraft's toilet last Thursday and smoked the drug.
