Nine people were killed in road accidents in the Republic and the North over the weekend. Two pedestrians were killed in incidents in Co Meath yesterday.

Mr Norman Stein (54), from Batterstown, died after being struck by a car near his home at 12.05 a.m. Later, at 5.15 a.m., a 21-year-old man was knocked down by a van at Rathgillen, Nobber. Gardai said the man lived locally.

In Co Longford, a 20 year-old man died after being struck by a bus at 2.30 a.m. at Farnagh, in Longford town. He has been named as Mr Martin McKiernan, of Aughnacliffe, Co Longford. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Longford hospital.

A 30-year-old woman died at 9.35 p.m. on Friday when her car struck a wall at Ballykilmurray, near Tullamore, Co Offaly. She was named as Ms Deirdre Wyer from Ballykilmurray.

Gardai named two men who died when their car collided with a bus on the Tallaght bypass on Friday as Mr Steven Cousins (33), from Allenton Green, Tallaght, and Mr Ronald O'Conner, Brichwood Drive, Springfield, Tallaght, who was in his 50s.

The total killed on the roads in the State so far this year is 263.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old man has died in a road accident in Co Antrim. His motor-scooter hit a wall at Glenmanus Road in Portrush, Co Antrim, shortly before 7.00 a.m. yesterday.

A second 23-year-old man was fatally injured in an accident in Coleraine, Co Derry. He was struck while walking on the Ballycastle Road shortly before 3 a.m. yesterday.

One man died at the Greystone crossroads in Dungannon, Co Tyrone last night when the tractor he was driving overturned.
