A MAN in his 30s was killed in a road traffic collision in Co Clare at the weekend and gardaí have named the man who died in a three-vehicle collision in Co Tipperary on Friday afternoon.

At about 2am on Saturday, Liam Tyler (32), from Newmarket-on-Fergus, was killed when the car he was driving was in collision with a lorry.

The incident occurred at Killulla, about two kilometres from Newmarket-on-Fergus on the old N18.

The car split in two in the collision and was recognisable only by the manufacturer’s logo on one of the alloy wheel-caps.

Mr Tyler was originally from Shannon. He had been living in Newmarket-on-Fergus and worked at Molex in the Shannon Free Zone.

He was the recipient of a Liosta na Laochra award from Shannon Town Council some years ago. The annual award recognises the achievements of members of the local community.

Two units of the fire brigade from Shannon town, along with ambulances from Limerick and Ennis, attended the scene. A local doctor was also called to the incident where he formally pronounced the victim dead.

One paramedic, who did not wish to be named, said: “It has to have been the worst I have seen in all my years in the job. The car was totally unrecognisable. We could only tell the make from the logo on the alloy wheels.

“Usually after a crash, a vehicle is lifted on to a tow truck and taken away. In this case, the car was literally swept and shovelled off the road, it was so badly demolished. I couldn’t believe it.”

Mr Tyler’s body was removed from the scene to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where a postmortem took place on Saturday morning.

The lorry driver was uninjured but fire personnel had to assist him from the vehicle as the impact caused both doors in the cab to jam.

He was examined at the scene by medics but declined to be taken to hospital for further examination.

Garda forensic crash scene investigators examined the scene on Saturday morning before both vehicles were removed to Shannon Garda station for further technical examinations. Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Newmarket-on-Fergus on 061 368172.

Gardaí also named the man killed in a road traffic collision on Friday afternoon in Co Tipperary as DJ Meehan (44), from Clonoulty, Cashel, Co Tipperary.

He was killed when his car was involved in three-car collision at Ballinattin, Rosegreen. The incident happened at about 2.45pm.

The male driver and male passenger, the only occupants, of a 4x4 vehicle were taken to the South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel where their condition was described as serious.

The male driver, and only occupant, of the third vehicle, was uninjured.
