London - Secret British archives whose publication was blocked last week show that the Queen Mother favoured appeasing Hitler during the second World War, the Independent on Sunday newspaper said yesterday.
The documents were part of a collection of archived papers belonging to Sir Walter Monckton. Many of his papers were released to the public last Wednesday, but some were not, prompting speculation about their contents. The Independent on Sunday, citing senior government sources, said some papers remained secret for the "potentially far more embarrassing" reason that they included letters showing the "true extent of the Queen Mother's pro-appeasement views" early in the war.
The Queen Mother's spokesman yesterday dismissed the claim as "nonsense".
