The Police Service of Northern Ireland has begun an investigation after two suspicious fires in counties Down and Antrim early today.

In the first incident, wooden pallets were pushed against a frozen food store in Doagh Road, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim and set alight shortly before 4am.

Police said the blaze at the main door of the premises caused damage to a compressor room and scorch damage to the building.

Elsewhere, emergency services were called to deal with a blaze at a vacant property in Bingham Street, Bangor, in Co Down which was reported just before 4am.

A number of nearby properties were also checked to ensure no one was in danger after the alarm was raised.

The PSNI have appealed for anyone with information about either fire to come forward.
