CHANDIGARH - A proSikh regional party and its Hindu nationalist ally, promising religious harmony and peace in India's agricultural "hub, won a clear majority in local polls in the troubled state of Punjab yesterday.
Officials said the predominantly Sikh Akali Dal party of the former state chief minister, Mr Prakash Singh Badal, won 45 seats in the 117 member state assembly out of the 73 results declared so far. The party was leading in 27 other seats.
