London - A judge yesterday set September 27th as the date for the start of extradition hearings against Gen Augusto Pinochet, wanted in Spain on torture charges dating back to his time as Chilean dictator.

The decision meant Gen Pinochet, who was arrested last October, will have spent almost a year under arrest in Britain by the time he faces a hearing on whether he should be extradited.
