A petrol station worker suffered facial injuries early this morning in a shooting during an attempted armed robbery in west Dublin.

The attack happened at the Statoil filling station on the North Road, Finglas, at about 2.30am.

Three men approached the station and threatened a male member of staff. When they failed to get into the building one of the men shot the man through the glass window. The main door of the station was closed at the time.

He suffered a serious eye injury and is being treated in the Mater hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The attackers fled the scene on foot; a number of Garda units searched the area within minutes of the attack, but no arrests have been made.

The Garda Press Office said a description of only one of the men was available. He is described as being of medium height, wearing white Nike runners with a blue Nike logo and black gloves and possibly aged in his late 20s. He wore a black ski mask over his face.

A spokesman said the two men who were not wearing masks were aware of CCTV in operation and were able to shield their faces from the camera.
