An elderly man has died in a house fire in Northern Ireland, police said today.

An elderly man has died in a house fire in Northern Ireland, police said today.

Robert Maxwell, 66, was in a property at Govan Drive, Tullycarnet, east Belfast, this morning.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead. Police are not treating the blaze, reported at 7.45am, as suspicious.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “The cause of the fire is being investigated.

“A man aged 66 was taken to hospital by ambulance but he had died on arrival.”

There were three fire engines called to the end-terrace, two-storey house. Two smoke alarms in the building were working.
