MOSCOW - Men armed with at least one grenade hijacked a bus with some 35 people aboard in southern Russia yesterday, but after demanding $100,000 ransom they freed most of their hostages and disappeared with police in pursuit.

A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry in Moscow said two or three men seized the crowded bus in Makhachkala, the capital of the mainly Muslim ethnic region of Dagestan, which borders Chechnya.
