Gardaí and county council officials are to meet in Kerry this week to address the problem of access to beaches and other amenities along narrow roads.

Several of Kerry's popular beaches and climbing spots have poor access, with tracks, or at best boreens, leading to them.

In the absence of parking facilities, cars are left strewn along both sides of the already narrow roads, often making it impossible for ambulances and fire engines to make their way through, according to representatives for the services.

The past week has seen a number of emergencies where services had difficulty accessing areas because of parked cars and caravans. The problem of blocked roads has also led to incidents of rage between motorists to which gardaí have been called.

The Maherees area as well as Ladies' Beach in Ballybunion are often inaccessible. Popular mountain trails in the Killarney area are also off limits to emergency vehicles at weekends.

Gardaí are to ask the county council to approach landowners to open their fields as car parks. The practice of charging a small daily parking fee is already operating in some areas. Such off-road parking is the only solution and should be encouraged, according to senior gardaí.

Gardaí are also to ask the council to erect signage. Under the proposals, illegally parked vehicles along narrow roads would be towed away.
