Paddy Power bookmakers are refunding bets worth €200,000 that fans placed on Ireland to win the world cup.

"It's good to give something back to the punters," said Mr Paddy Power. "And it means that there's more money in their pockets for the next game."

The bookmakers has been offering `specials' throughout the World Cup where bets were refunded if certain players scored in a game, regardless of the result. Robbie Keane was the nominated man against Spain.

"We've been offering specials all through the competition," said Mr Power, "and the England game against Denmark was a terrible result for us."

Powers had selected Rio Ferdinand as their `special' and a Fifa decision to award what had seemed an own goal to Ferdinand cost the bookmaker between €300,000-€400,000.

"We've been living by skin of our teeth for the whole World Cup," said Mr Power. "We were bound to get caught out eventually."

"But we're not complaining. We've had a great world cup with teams such as France, Argentina and Portugal being knocked out."
