Figures released by the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, show 76 fewer people were killed on Irish roads than the previous year, which is a drop of 20 per cent. A total of 333 people were killed from November 2002 to this month, compared to 409 the previous year.

Mr Brennan said the number of serious injuries fell by 13.5 per cent and minor injuries declined by 10.7 per cent.

However, he said the number of motorcycle deaths were up by 10 per cent, which he described as a "worrying development".

"Motorcyclists are a particularly vulnerable category of road user," he said, adding that he will be introducing a number of safety measures in the near future, including compulsory training for motorcyclists.

Of those who have received penalty points, three people have notched up ten points in the past year. Once a motorist receives 12 points in any three year period, they incur an automatic 12-month ban.
