Mr Eamon Ó Cuiv.

Speaking in Castlebar this afternoon, Mr Ó Cuiv said that he was not satisfied with British claims that the disease is under control.

"Not only are we getting fresh outbreaks every day in Britain, but they are very, very dispersed in terms of geography. There are new areas with outbreaks all the time," he said.

"They don't seem to have got it under control, and that is of major concern to us here, because at the end of the day what happens in Britain could have disastrous consequences for this country."

Mr Ó Cuiv said: "It is of paramount importance to us that the British would get this disease under control. Unfortunately, when the early stages of this disease were reported, they did not seem to able to control it.

"I would hope that they are aware that not only are they hurting their own economy, but they are also having a huge effect on the economy of the neighbouring island, Ireland.

"It is of importance to us that they would take a serious view of this disease and they would be willing to make the types of sacrifices that the people are willing to take to control this disease."
