Over the next seven years 1,750 new homes will be built in the Glenbryn area of North Belfast.
The North Belfast Housing Partnership (comprising the Department for Social Development, NI Housing Executive and nine Housing Associations) plan to invest £8.7 million sterling in the area as part of their housing strategy.
The new homes will be available to rent and will replace derelict properties.
Speaking at the launch Mr Maurice Morrow, Minister for Social Development in Northern Ireland, said: "Over the past 30 years North Belfast has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. While it is clear that addressing the housing needs will not solve the multiple social problems which exist, the provision of good quality housing is essential in improving the life of those experiencing social deprivation."
The new houses are part of the Housing Partnership's seven year plan for North Belfast. The main elements of the £133 million plan include investing £15 million to acquire land for new houses, £13 million in private sector grants to reduce unfitness and spending £28 million in improving existing Housing Executive accomodation.
