New stamps mark Irish language contributions

An Post has unveiled four new stamps today to mark significant contributions made to the development of the Irish language.

An Post has unveiled four new stamps today to mark significant contributions made to the development of the Irish language.

The 48 cent stamps mark the 50th anniversary of the Department of the Gaeltacht and the 10th anniversary of TG4, and commemorate the Celtic scholars Máirtin Ó Cadhain and Johann Caspar Zeuss.

Máirtin Ó Cadhain is considered one of the most talented writers in the Irish language. His best known work is the novel Cre na Cille (Churchyard Clay) .

Johann Caspar Zeuss was born in Germany is 1806 and is widely recognised as the father of Celtic studies. Grammatica Celticais his published research work.

The Department of the Gaeltacht was set up in 1956, with one of its aims to encourage the preservation and extension of Irish in Gaeltacht areas. It promotes the cultural, economic and social welfare of the Gaeltacht.

TG4 was established in 1996 to provide programming in the Irish language. The station invests over €15 million a year in Irish programming, and over 800,000 viewers tune in every day.
