A 13-year-old boy and his mother are still being treated in Dublin hospitals for injuries sustained in a house fire in Drogheda which claimed the lives of three family members.

Two boys, James McDonagh (8), Tony jnr (16) died along with their brother, 21-year-old Martin, after a fire at their home on the Moneymore estate on Monday morning.

Eddie McDonagh (13), who managed to escape by jumping out a window at the front of the burning house, was critically injured. He was transferred today from the intensive care unit at Temple Street Children’s Hospital to Crumlin Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

His mother Kathleen remains at St James’s Hospital where she is continuing to improve and her condition was described this afternoon as “satisfactory”.

His father Anthony McDonagh was released from hospital yesterday afternoon.

The Garda investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing but it is not thought to be suspicious.

The emergency services were called to the house on Drogheda’s Moneymore estate shortly before 8am on Monday. Neighbours made several attempts to reach those trapped inside, but were beaten back by the intense heat.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Drogheda Borough Council has opened a book of condolences in the foyer of its offices on Friar Street in the town, between 9am and 5pm, until next Wednesday. A minute’s silence was held at the beginning of the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade yesterday.
