Chisinau - Moldovans streamed to the ballot boxes yesterday in a referendum which President Petru Lucinschi hopes will show popular support for strengthening his powers amid a deep economic crisis.
Mr Lucinschi's motion, distributed to voters on separate ballots at local elections being held across the country, requires at least 60 per cent electoral turnout with more than 50 per cent cast in favour to pass.
