Senator George Mitchell was yesterday given a further award for steering the peace talks in the North to a successful conclusion.
Senator Mitchell received the Interfaith Gold Medallion awarded by the International Council of Christians and Jews.
Making the award, the patron of the group, Sir Sigmund Sternberg, said that the senator had demonstrated a wide range of skills and had been gifted by fate to apply those to peacemaking in Northern Ireland.
Senator Mitchell was the recipient of almost every honour that can be awarded, he said, but none was greater than the lives that he had saved by his efforts.
