A son-in-law of former South African president Nelson Mandela will face an extradition hearing after being charged with rape in the US state of Connecticut, an Interpol official said today.

Isaac Amuah was granted 500,000 rand ($73,320) bail yesterday after turning himself over to police in South Africa, said Interpol spokeswoman Tummi Shai.

"He is going appear on February 11th for an extradition proceedings because America wants him extradited back to America," she said.

Mr Amuah was charged with raping a US woman in 1993, law enforcement officials have said.

Neither Mr Amuah nor his lawyer were immediately available for comment but local media cited his lawyer as saying at the bail hearing that Mr Amuah has denied the charges.
