A man charged in connection with the New Year's Day murder of a father of three children was freed on £500 bail yesterday, but ordered to live at a secret address for his own safety. Mr Stephen Allen (28), from Ardnaglass Gardens, Antrim, had been remanded in custody accused of withholding information about the murder of Mr Denvir Smith (32), who was battered to death.

In the High Court in Belfast a Crown lawyer said Mr Allen had provided replacement clothes for a man suspected of involvement in the murder. The man was now in custody and would probably be charged with the murder, for which three other men had already been charged.
