Man on rape charge granted bail

A man appeared in court in Co Donegal charged with rape and sexual assault

A man appeared in court in Co Donegal charged with rape and sexual assault. The man, who was arrested at his home yesterday morning, was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was charged, before being brought before Carndonagh District Court.

Garda Supt Jim Gallagher told the court that the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.

Both offences are alleged to have occurred on June 21st, 2000.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with raping a female contrary to Section 2(1) of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act 1981 as amended by Section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990.

He is charged with sexual assault contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990.

A solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Dorrian, requested legal aid on the grounds that his client had been suspended from his job.

Judge John O'Donnell granted legal aid and remanded the man on bail to appear before Letterkenny District Court on October 18th. Bail was set at £600 with an independent surety of £2,000.
