Man injured in Ballymun shooting

A man is being treated in hospital after a shooting in north Dublin yesterday morning.

The 23-year-old, from Coolock in north Dublin, was shot near the Towers Pub in Ballymun Town Centre shortly before 2am on Sunday.

It is understood that at least two shots were fired on the man by a lone gunman, and he was injured in the face, head and back.

Gardaí were called to the scene after locals reported hearing the gun shots.

The man was found slumped on a stool in the Towers Pub having made his way there after the shooting, possibly with someone's help.

He was conscious when gardaí found him shortly after the attack but had severe injuries to his face.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to the Mater hospital.

Last night a spokeswoman for the Mater said the man was in intensive care and that his condition was serious but not life-threatening.

The scene of the attack has been isolated for technical examination. Debris, including gun cartridges from the weapon that injured the victim, was forensically checked.

CCTV footage from the area will be studied in an attempt to establish the identity of the attacker.

Gardaí at Santry station are leading the investigation. They have called for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information relating to it to contact them.

A Garda spokeswoman could not confirm whether or not the victim was known to gardaí.
