A second man has been arrested in Co Wicklow as part of what gardai describe as their ongoing investigations into the activities of organised criminals.

This follows the arrest of a man on Sunday after a firearm and a quantity of money were seized in Co Kildare.

Members of the organised crime unit yesterday stopped two cars near Ballymore Eustace in an operation targeting a criminal gang.

Gardaí fired a number of shots after one of the cars failed to stop. A man who was driving one of the cars escaped.

A Garda spokesman said a second man, in his late 30s, was arrested this afternoon in Wicklow.

Both men are being held at Naas Garda station under the provisions of section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.
