A man is due in court after a series of sectarian petrol bomb attacks in Co Derry this morning.

One house in Magherafelt was damaged when two petrol bombs were thrown at it. A third petrol bomb caused scorch damage to a second house, while a fourth device damaged a car. A fifth petrol bomb hit a tree.

A PSNI spokesman said a sectarian slogan was daubed on the wall of a third house. Two women were taken to hospital to be treated for shock, the spokesman added.

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted intimidation and disorderly behaviour. He was due to appear before Derry Magistrates Court this afternoon.

In Belfast a pipe bomb exploded near houses in the Short Strand area of East Belfast last night.

Five people - three children under the age of 11 and a man and a woman - escaped injury when the bomb exploded at the back of their house at around midnight in Bryson Court.

The police said no-one was injured and that there was "minor damage to property".

Meanwhile, British Army technical officers were examining a hi-jacked car at the Fir Trees Hotel in Strabane, Co Tyrone.
