A SEVERE asthma sufferer fell from a window ledge of a burning building moments before firefighters were able to rescue him, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

But the efforts of two gardai prevented the loss of further life in the fire at a house in Lower Buckingham Street, Dublin.

The City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, recorded a verdict of accidental death in the case of Mr Matthew Garnett (50), of Pearse House, Pearse Street.

Dr Farrell commended the bravery of Garda Luke Lacey and Garda Eugene O'Leary, of Store Street, who succeeded in rescuing the man's girlfriend, Ms Susan Murray, from the fire on December 1st, 1996.
