Police have charged a man after armed officers used a Taser stun gun at Gatwick Airport to subdue a suspect who was spotted with a handgun.

The man boarded a bus from Crawley, West Sussex, to the airport shortly after 2am yesterday and a passenger raised the alarm after seeing him with the gun.

The man went into the South Terminal building at the airport, where he was apprehended by police on routine patrol who used a Taser gun to disable him.

He was arrested and taken into custody at Crawley.

Today Sussex Police said David Sheehan (46) of Curteys Walk, Bewbush, Crawley, has been charged with having possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence under Section 16A of the Firearms Act.

He will appear before Crawley magistrates later today, a police spokesman said.
