A man has been charged with the murder of a Northern Ireland schoolgirl 18 years ago. Robert Black (62) was issued with a summons on Tuesday charging him with the murder of nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy who went missing from Ballinderry village in August 1981.

He received the summons in prison in England where he is serving a number of life sentences.

The girl was snatched as she cycled to a friend’s house. Her red bike was discovered in a field beside a hedge near her home and her body was found six days later by two fishermen, at McKee’s Dam, near Hillsborough.

Black is believed to have been working in Northern Ireland at the time of the murder. He is due to appear in court in the North at a later date.
