Beirut - While much of the world lamented the death of a veteran peacemaker, Lebanon's people and press yesterday remembered King Hussein as the man who "sold out" to their arch-enemy Israel.

Lebanon announced an official three-day mourning period for the king on Sunday despite longstanding dismay over his 1994 peace deal with Israel, which strained ties with Beirut and worsened relations with Syria.

Lebanon remains officially at war with Israel, which has occupied a 15km (nine-mile) deep strip in the south for 14 years, and most Lebanese have not forgotten or forgiven the Jewish state for invading their country.
