Three near-simultaneous blasts killed two people and wounded 12 in Nepal's capital Kathmandu today, police said, the first since a peace process ended a bloody Maoist revolt in May last year.

Two explosions hit busy market areas in the heart of the city, while the third was near an industrial area in a northwestern suburb, at about 4pm (local time).

"We have two dead and 12 injured from the three explosions," police said, adding that they had stepped up security. No group owned up the attacks.

A witness at the site of one of the city centre blasts said he saw many people falling to the ground.
