The jury in the case of a now 71-year-old Kerry man on trial for rape and indecent assault of a young girl 40 years ago has failed to reach agreement on any charge and has been discharged.

The four-day trial heard allegations of rape and indecent assault between April 1969 and April 1975. The abuse allegedly began when the girl was aged 11, the trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Tralee was told.

A jury of 11 men and one woman had been selected and the trial began on Wednesday. Closing speeches began on Monday.

After just over four hours the foreman of the jury told Mr Justice Paul Butler they had no agreement on any of the counts they were deliberating on – comprising 11 charges of indecent assault and three counts of rape.
