A judge has congratulated drug squad detectives following the conviction of Edward Judd Scanlon, of Model Farm Road, Cork, at Cork Circuit Criminal Court for supplying ecstasy and cocaine worth £30,000.

Judge A.G. Murphy praised Det Insp Tony Quilter and Det Sgt Mick Fitzpatrick who observed Scanlon handing over a bag containing ecstasy to Christopher O'Doherty and responded quickly to the situation, contacting colleagues who arrested O'Doherty on March 20th, 1997.

O'Doherty was a heroin addict in the clutches of drug barons, the judge said, but through his own efforts had given up drugs and given evidence despite serious threats.

Sentencing of Scanlon was adjourned to April 29th.
