Judge awards £8 for fly in bottle

Judge Desmond Windle made an award of just £8 to a family who found a fly in their bottle of orange drink

Judge Desmond Windle made an award of just £8 to a family who found a fly in their bottle of orange drink. Mr David Palmer, of Turvey Green, Donabate, his wife, Jacqueline, and their son, Robert (4), sued Robert Savage Ltd of Swords Shopping Centre for distress and revulsion.

Swords District Court heard that they found a fly in a bottle of orange drink they bought in JC's Supermarket in July 1997. Mr Declan Wade, solicitor, suggested a figure of £400 as suitable compensation. "You'd be doing well to get 400 pennies," said Judge Windle. He awarded David Palmer £5, Jacqueline Palmer £1 and Robert Palmer £2.
