Gerlach, Nevada - The Thrust Supersonic car broke through the speed of sound twice yesterday but failed by one minute to set the world's first supersonic land speed record.

Under international racing rules, the jet-powered car has to repeat its supersonic run twice within one hour to set the record. But it took 61 minutes for engineers to prepare the car and for it to hurtle back the track.

The speed for the jet-engined British car's first run was 764.168 miles per hour (1,222 kph).

The second run reached a speed of 760.135 mph (1,216 kph).
