Israeli aircraft fired at least five missiles at targets around the complex housing Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's headquarters in Gaza City, witnesses said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the strike, the latest in a spiralling round of tit-for-tat violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Firemen kept reporters from the scene.
Palestinians usually evacuate expected Israeli targets in anticipation of air strikes. Mr Arafat has been confined by Israeli tanks to his West Bank headquarters in the town of Ramallah since December.
