Aer Lingus announces special flights for World Cup playoff

Ryanair also schedules extra flights to Copenhagen for Republic of Ireland v Denmark

Almost 1,400 additional seats have been made available to fly Irish soccer fans to Denmark for the Republic of Ireland's World Cup playoff.

Aer Lingus, which does not normally fly to the country, has announced five flights from Dublin to Copenhagen for the November 11th away leg, comprising 1,000 seats in total. Meanwhile, Ryanair has scheduled four extra flights to and from Copenhagen for the clash, giving another 378 people the opportunity to get to the match.

The Aer Lingus seats go on sale on Friday from 10am, while Ryanair said on Thursday its additional space was already selling quickly.

"Irish sporting fans are renowned for their unwavering support and Aer Lingus is delighted to be able to transport the hundreds of soccer enthusiasts to Copenhagen to support Ireland as they face Denmark in their World Cup playoff," Aer Lingus said in a statement.

From the minute the Republic of Ireland was drawn against the Scandinavian team, the usual concerns emerged about the availability and price of transport there.

By Wednesday, before the extra flights were announced, the cost of a return flight was priced at up to €458.

The away leg takes place in the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Saturday, November 11th, at 8.40pm, with the second leg in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, November 14th.
