Jakarta - Indonesia will free the jailed East Timor guerrilla leader, Xanana Gusmao, whether the territory chooses to remain with Indonesia or become independent, the Foreign Minister, Mr Ali Alatas, said yesterday.
The President, Mr B.J. Habibie, wants the East Timor issue resolved by next January. This means that Gusmao, jailed for 20 years in 1992 for leading pro-independence rebels, could be released as soon as next year.
