Beirut - The former Lebanese president, Mr Amin Gemayel, a leading Christian opposition figure who opposes Syria's heavy influence in the country, was expected to return here yesterday afternoon after eight years of exile in France, one of his close associates said.

Mr Gemayel, who left Lebanon after receiving threats, has been told he can receive an official welcome at the airport given to former heads of state, the source said.
