With so much clamouring for attention in the garden right now, it's easy to forget our indoor plants, that uncomplaining crew that all year round brings a welcome greenness to the inside of the house. Tip the plants gently out of their containers to see if they need repotting. If the roots are packed tight or are running round in circles repot them, with fresh compost, into a slightly larger pot.

Many houseplants suffer from over-watering, but others, especially those grown in peat-based compost in warm rooms, can dry out so much that water makes no impression on them and flows right out through the pot. Rescue these dry old things by plunging them into a bucket of lukewarm water enriched with dilute plant feed. Don't remove them until they stop bubbling.

Meanwhile, all container plants (indoor and out) will benefit from a routine weekly feed. If you plan to do it every weekend - or on a specific day - it's easier to remember.
