Gardaí in Co Tipperary were last night questioning two men arrested early yesterday morning in connection with an assault which left a 33-year-old man in a critical condition.

Supt Michael Devine confirmed that two men in their 20s were arrested at a house in Clonmel early yesterday morning and brought to Cahir Garda station for questioning.

Yesterday's arrests follow the arrest on Monday of another man in Clonmel who was brought to Clonmel Garda station and questioned for several hours before being released without charge.

The injured man suffered serious head injuries in the attack at Gladstone Street in the centre of Clonmel at around 2.45am on Monday and was brought to St Joseph's hospital in Clonmel.

The injured man, who is from Clonmel, was later transferred to Cork University Hospital where his condition was yesterday described as "critical but stable".
