A Garda sergeant was the victim of a serious assault while trying to arrest a man in Louth village on Sunday night and required medical treatment, according to gardai.

Sgt Paul Tennanty was trying to arrest the man in connection with a driving offence at around 9.30 p.m. when he resisted the sergeant, who was punched and kicked. A file is expected to be sent to the DPP.
