One of the four men jailed for the killing of Det Garda Jerry McCabe is to marry a Cavan Sinn Féin councillor and schoolteacher.

Pearse McCauley, who is serving 14 years for the manslaughter in 1996 of the detective in Adare, Co Limerick, during an abortive post office van robbery, is due to wed Ms Pauline Tully at a date and time to be confirmed.

However, it is believed the wedding could take place as early as today.

The wedding ceremony will be performed by the retired parish priest of Kilnaleck, Father Patrick McManus. He said yesterday he could not comment on when the wedding would take place.

"I have promised the people not to say what time or date it is on. I'm not free to tell you that," he said.

It was reported in yesterday's Star newspaper that Mr McCauley would be released from Castlerea Prison for the ceremony. However, a spokeswoman for the Irish Prison Service said: "The Service does not discuss individual cases of temporary release".

Last night Ms Tully told The Irish Times she planned to marry Mr McCauley (37), from Strabane, Co Tyrone, but would not be disclosing when. "It's between the two of us and our families," she said.

"We've been engaged for over two years so we are hoping to marry at some stage, but I'm not giving anybody information at all on it," she added.

She confirmed that she met Mr McCauley in Castlerea Prison while visiting as part of a Sinn Féin delegation.

Ms Tully teaches at Cavan Vocational School.
