AN INVESTIGATION into a crash in north Dublin in the early hours of Sunday morning in which a woman was killed and a man was seriously injured is continuing.

Anne Fitzsimons (53), a mother of 15-year-old twins, died and her friend Tom McKiernan suffered head injuries when a car mounted the curb and struck a group of pedestrians on the Malahide Road in Fairview at about 2.15am.

Mr McKiernan was taken to the Mater hospital following the incident with head injuries. He was later moved to Beaumont Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital last night said Mr McKiernan was in a critical condition.

It is understood his condition has improved since Sunday and that he suffered a fractured skull, broken legs and other injuries.

Ms Fitzsimons, from Brian Avenue, Marino, was heavily involved in the 1st Dublin Fairview scout group, while Mr McKiernan is the group leader.

They were part of a group which was returning from Kavanagh’s pub in Fairview when the crash occurred.

Three others suffered minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and later released without charge. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí from Clontarf Garda station were yesterday continuing their inquiries into the crash and have appealed for witnesses to the collision to contact them on (01) 6664800.

Floral tributes were left for Ms Fitzsimons on the railings opposite where the crash occurred.
