Retired south Galway farmer Finbar Fahy, who was killed in his home last week, was a "noble gentleman and friend", parish priest Fr Richie Higgins said at his funeral today.
Fr Higgins, who administered the last rites to Mr Fahy (78) almost a week ago, also paid tribute to the local community of Labane and Ardrahan for rallying around to give Mr Fahy's family the support that they so needed.
In driving rain, hundreds of people attended the funeral this afternoon at St Teresa's Church, Labane - the same day as a memorial Mass for Mr Fahy's late wife, Ciss (Celia), was due to be held.
The congregation heard how Mr Fahy would visit his wife's grave almost every day, using his bicycle to travel to the local shop. Sympathies were extended to his three sons, Gerry, Aidan and Noel, and their extended families, including grandchildren and one grand-child.
Mr Fahy was found dead in his home at Tullira, Labane, on the N18 between Ardrahan and Gort last Wednesday morning.
His grandson, Gearóid Fahy, Carrownamona, Ardrahan, has been charged with his murder, and was remanded in custody.
