LONDON - British rural workers were up in arms yesterday over a member of Parliament's confirmation that he plans to introduce legislation banning the hunting of fox, deer, mink and bares with hounds.

But animal welfare groups described a decision by the Labour MP, Mr Mike Foster, to introduce a Bill in the House of Commons aimed at abolishing hunting wild mammals with dogs as "the best chance for many years to put an end to what is a cruel and unnecessary sport".

The Labour Party vowed in its campaign manifesto to hold a vote to ban horse and hound hunting, a position bolstered by a recent report by the National Trust.
